"The Wheat Harvest" was created from pages from an old and sadly damaged copy Scribner's Monthly from late 1800's.
I fell in love with this book, a bound collection of stories and illustrations that had been published in the literary periodical of the time, and while the written word would catch my attention, it was artwork that mesmerized me, and that served as both inspiration and fodder for this one of kind piece of collaged, antique art called "The Wheat Harvest."
"The Wheat Harvest" is created with grand respect for the Earth, with re-cycling and up-cycling at heart. Anything that I can do to prevent such items as an old and damaged book like this one from ending up in our landfills is not only a noble effort to me, but it is as act of healing, creative expression. It is Medicine. Medicine that offers creative thinking and doing and that breathes new life into something that no longer serves its original purpose.
The substrates for this piece are created from layers of corrugated cardboard that are cut to size to create layered bases for this beautiful image. They are collaged with the printed pages from the same Scribner's Monthly book. The felt I used to add contrast and to frame the wonderful illustration is made from recycled plastic bottles.
"The Wheat Harvest" measures approximately 8-inches by 6-inches and is ready to hang from a well secured sawtooth hanger on the back.
The work is signed on the back. And it was made with love.
